Where events are starting to feel a little uncomfortable, he can look around the room to draw people’s attention. Then a sudden calm often appears from an intense situation. He can bring a room back to self-discipline with hardly a word.
The pragmatism, I think it’s intrinsic to the man that he has a very worldly view but that he is so able to take his place at the table, whether you’re discussing a corporate initiative, or your talking about a divisional initiative, or you’re talking about a private equity initiative.
He is very good at creating deep human connections with individuals. He does that by noticing small things about people and is able to respectfully give them valuable, often life changing, feedback.
He’s got a flair for nurturing long term significant relationships. So I can trust him if I bring a client in and he goes in to meet them. He will then take it upon himself to develop and nurture the relationship in a way that makes me feel completely safe.
We have a cross section of people at different levels, from senior managers down to fairly junior staff; he treats their views all with the same validity, whether they’re a junior or senior member of staff, and he creates that open feeling.
